Then and Now: Updating an 80’s Wedding for Today

Ah, the 1980's. It was a bad, bad time for weddings. Big dresses, bigger veils, and hair that couldn't fit in the door. We can learn a lot on wedding planning and styling from the days of matching sateen bridesmaids and tulle ass bow weddings.

Ah, the 1980's. It was a bad, bad time for weddings. Big dresses, bigger veils, and hair that couldn't fit in the door. We can learn a lot about wedding planning and styling from the days of matching sateen bridesmaids and tulle ass bow weddings. For example, take the classic 1980's wedding cake:

Castles were BIG in the 1980's. They inspired castle shaped wedding cakes and castle cake toppers. It's a nice thought – that whole fairy tale/knight in shining armor thing – but don't you think it could be done better? Check out the two 2010's cakes – they're perfect for a Disney wedding or fairy tale theme.

And now those infamous 1980's bridesmaid dresses:

All matching (right down to the shoes) and lots of shiny fabrics. Update it for a wedding today by using more natural fabrics for the dresses, letting your bridesmaids pick out different dresses in shades of green, or use matching dresses but let your 'maids wear non-matching shoes.

The point of this post? To show you that it IS possible to update your mom's/grandma's Must Dos (from the 1980's) into something contemporary and stylish.

How would you update an awful 1980's wedding trend?
