If you follow me on Instagram at all (And why don't you? I AM AWESOME.), then you know that we travel a lot with our kids. Like, road trips or plane trips every few weeks. I'll be honest, the getting there part of any trip is… not fun. But, after two kids and lots of experience, I feel like I can share my top five tips for a successful road trip with kids.

First off, as a parent, you've just got to make your peace that any road trip is going to involve some meltdowns. It could be due to poor planning, circumstances out of your control, or just plain old kid stuff – but it's going to happen. Accept it and move on. And, if for some reason, you don't experience any meltdowns during your trip – thank the travel gods and DO NOT BRAG about it. That karma? She hates that. Okay? Moving on to what I like to call The Five S's of Road Tripping with Kids!

Stops: Be sure to plan for regular get-out-of-the-car stops, especially if anyone is potty training. Kids need to get out of the car and stretch their legs, explore new areas, and use their outside voices. If you can, check online for rest stops and family-friendly areas along your route.

Snacks: Easy to grab, yummy snacks are a MUST on a road trip. You need things that little hands can easily hold on to and eat without assistance. I try to feed my family organic whenever possible so I like to pack some Stonyfield® Organic YoKids® yogurt in a cooler with mini water bottles. I prefer the pouches for travel since they can be closed but still maintain that great taste and are without the use of toxic persistent pesticides, artificial hormones, antibiotics, and GMOs.

Screens: I don't care – I LOVE SCREEN TIME. Tablets loaded with fun kid apps and movies are 100% worth the investment in my opinion. Before we travel, I always try to download at least one new app and one new movie for my kids to enjoy.

Snores: Whenever possible, try to travel while your kids normally would be sleeping (i.e. at night or at naptime). Sure, I know it's rough on your schedule but it'll be easier in the long run since you'll have less time to worry about entertaining your kids while in the car.

Snuggles: Comfort is key with kids so make sure that you've dressed them comfortably and bring along any snuggly favorites (like a blanket or stuffed animal). Also, there may be times when you'll need to just stop and hold your kids. Meltdowns or too much inactivity can trigger emotional stuff that calls for cuddles to make it all better.
