DIY: Turn a Onesie into a T-Shirt

I have always been a fan of dressing Melanie in T-shirts and pants instead of onesies.

Call me a lazy bitch but it just seems easier to deal with pants over snaps AND pants.

DIY: Turn a Onesie into a T-Shirt

So when I found the cutest onesie the other day, I decided to bust out my semi-DIY skills and make it into a little tee.

In case you wanna know, here's how to turn a onesie into a T-shirt:

Here's what you'll need:

  • Onesie
  • Old Kid's T-Shirt
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine (+ a Serger, if you have one)
  • Iron
  • Ironing Mat

Here's how it breaks down:

Step One:

Gather your supplies and lay out the onesie on a flat surface.

Step Two:

Using the old T-shirt as a pattern (lay it on top of the onesie and match up the shoulder seams), use the fabric scissors to cut the bottom off the onesie.

Big Fat Tip: Don't forget to add about a 1/2 an inch for a seam allowance.

Step Three:

Turn the tee inside out and lay it on your ironing surface.

Step Four:

Turn the bottom up to make a 1/2 inch seam and press (don't stretch!) with the iron.

Step Five:

Use a straight stitch on your sewing machine and sew one seam closer to the cut edge.

If you have a Serger, skip this step and just run a seam around the cut edge.

Be sure to gently pull the fabric as you sew so the knit can stretch properly.

Step Six:

Next, sew another seam on your sewing machine closer to the folded edge.

This will create a nice double seam that matches those generally found on onesies.

Step Seven:

Turn the T-shirt right side out and enjoy!

Melanie looks adorable in her semi-DIY T-shirt (especially with a tutu!)!

This project was so easy that I'm planning on making LOTS more of these.

What onesie would you turn into a T-shirt for your baby?

All my babies onsies. I am doing EC with my son and having a shirt would be so much better than a onsie. Then all I would need is pants or a cool diaper cover.

Thanks for the instructions! My in-laws sent our baby a really cute onesie that is weirdly wide and short (it says 18 months but the length is more like 6 months). I’m going to try your instructions and turn it into a t shirt.

My toddler is small enough that she still has a bunch of onesies that fit BUT she’s potty training so the snaps are a terrible idea. I’m going to start on my pile ASAP! Thanks for the quick tutorial!

Such a good idea for those potty training days!
