This week is all about food (After quite the over indulgance this last long weekend, I am cutting waaay back on my calories and living vicariously through my posts). Today, we'll concentrate on the hor dourves part of the cocktail hour/reception. On a super tight budget or having a tea/brunch/or dessert reception? Skip the hordourves and save some $$$. But, if you love the idea of giving your guests some nibbles as you pose for the photographer or mingle (or squeeze in a quickie…hey, you're married – celebrate it!) then providing a selection of hor dourves is a nice touch. To save yourself some money right off the bat, try:
1. Nixing the passed hordourves. Paying for waitstaff quickly raises the bottomline on your budget. Instead, set up a few hor dourves "stations" (basically, scatter a few small tables around the reception site and place one hor dourves selection at each one…remember to include a small stack of napkins or plates at each station). Or, recruit a few local teens or college students (or friends) to be the "waitstaff". Don't make them wear the penguin suits. Just allow them to dress nicely and wear a big smile. Offer to pay them in gift cards or swap tutoring sessions or iTunes downloads in exchange for their time.
2. The cool thing about hor dourves is that they can be literally anything as long as they are bitesized. No need for fancy schmancy food stuffs – just use simple ingredients and make it mini. Now is the time to use day old bread or generic brands. Trust me, you'll save a bundle and it will taste fine.
3. It's all about the presentation. You could serve pigs-in-a-blanket and if you dress it up – people will be convinced it's classy thing ever. Use bamboo skewers instead of toothpicks, present them on shiny silver or classic white platters, and plate them in tiny shot glasses. Anything to make them stand out a bit and look like a million bucks.
