Your Wedding Might Be Boring and Unromantic

It seems that all you see these days are big, lush, deeply romantic weddings were all the guests are perfectly dressed and having a wonderful time. But what if your wedding is small and simple and your guests just sit around and talk? Well, your wedding would be a lot like mine (and, I’m guessing, most people’s weddings). And you know what? Contrary to what all those magazines, TV shows, and blogs want you to think – that’s fine. A boring and unromantic wedding is not bad or wrong or weird. It’s just fine.

Not everyone has a huge personality. Some people are quiet and introverted and usually, so are their friends. Get a group of introverted people together and you’ll probably end up with a tight group of people discussing the latest episode of “Dexter” and not a party on the dance floor. Be realistic. No DJ, dunk tank, karaoke machine is good enough to get people who are not inclined to show off to dance, dunk, or sing. Does that mean that they are bored? Not necessarily, they may love the opportunity to sit around, eat yummy food, and catch up with old friends.

And what if you do have outgoing friends? Well, you can definitely look forward to a packed dance floor but… what if those friends are having an off-night and don’t feel like dancing? What if they ate too much and feel bloated? What if they hate the music? What if, what if, what if. All the planning in the world can’t MAKE people do things. And forcing them only leads to rolled eyes and, frankly, anger.

So, I guess my question to you is – WHY do you think your wedding needs to be “not boring”? Do you feel that not having a DJ or interactive carnival games or Mad Libs at each table will send your guests into a downward spiral? What’s so bad about sitting around and eating food and chatting? Don’t get me wrong, a packed dance floor and fun games is awesome (I’ve been to weddings with both) but what’s so bad about NOT having those things (I’ve been to those weddings, too). Think of it this way, these days people might actually enjoy a wedding without multiple guest must-dos. They might actually LOVE “just” sitting around and talking.

And what about those deeply romantic and sentimental wedding moments we keep seeing pinned and repinned on Pinterest? Personally, love those. Also, not a one at my wedding. Not. A. Single. One. In fact, here’s the photo of my husband watching me walk down the aisle:

Thrilling, isn’t it? My wedding had sweet moments, definitely. But romantic? Eh. The most romantic thing that happened that day was my husband telling me (during our pre-ceremony photo shoot), “Don’t touch me, you’ll give me an erection.” True story.

So, what do you think Tulle Nation? Did you/do you feel pressure to have an AMZEBALLS wedding? Did you end up with a “boring” wedding? How was it? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

We’re pretty much counting on a “boring” wedding reception, having planned our reception as people who sit, eat, and talk at the majority of our gatherings.

Not as worried about the unromantic, though–the fiance is the sweet and romantic type by default 🙂

While I’m not engaged yet and don’t have a wedding story… I definitely think sites like Pinterest and the thousands of romantic sappy movies out there give brides a massively high expectation for similar moments in their wedding.

But when working with my clients I can vouch for the fact that sometimes, these moments really DO happen (and bring us vendors to small tears!)

I think there is a lot of worry about making your wedding “fabulous”. With the more traditional wedding websites, blogs, and such — they all emphasize the fabulosity of weddings over anything else. Your wedding should be beautiful, elegant, rich, all-inclusive, and romantic. Never helps if you had that one friend with a seemingly unlimited budget, who did make their wedding all that plus a take home bag of chips. I think most of us who are in the throws of planning a wedding feel that pressure, what to do about it is another question.
