I have been a fan of Marvel for a long time. I enjoy the comics and the complex and flawed characters and have really enjoyed all of the movies. The Hulk has been my favorite since I was a kid (I love green and also have an explosive anger inside me) so, when I found a cute Hulk T-shirt in the boy's section at Target the other day, I immediately looked for a version in the girls department. And found NOTHING. Not one “Avengers” ANYTHING in the entire girl's department.
So, I went back to the boy's department and grabbed an XS Hulk tee, then went home and busted out my semi-DIY skills to make it into a dress for my very own little Hulk. In case you've got a little girl who also loves superheroes, here's how to turn an “Avengers” boy's T-shirt into a little girl's dress:
Here's what you'll need:
- T-shirt
- An A-line dress in her size
- Fabric Scissors
- Thread
- Sewing Machine (+ a Serger, if you have one) + Thread
Here's how it breaks down:
Step One: Gather your supplies and lay out the T-shirt on a flat surface.
Step Two: Using an A-line dress in your daughter's size as a pattern (lay it on top of the T-shirt and match up the shoulder seams), cut along the “lines” of the dress. Don't forget to add about a 1/2 an inch for a seam allowance. I wanted sleeves on the dress but didn't want to mess with reworking them entirely, so I just trimmed a little off the width of the existing ones and decided to deal with the length later in the process.
Step Three: Turn the tee inside out and thread your sewing machine.
Step Four: Stitch a straight seam along the side seams (with a 1/2 inch seam allowance). I stopped and did a corner turn at the armpit with a bit of backstitching. Clip into the seam allowance every ½” – ¾” along the armpit, being very careful to not clip into your seam. ***If you have a Serger, skip this step and just run a seam around the cut edge.***
Step Five: For the sleeves, you'll need to decide what length you want them to be (I held the dress up to my daughter and just eyeballed a cap sleeve) and then add your seam allowance (I did a 1/4 inch seam allowance). Use a straight stitch on your sewing machine and sew a seam along your sleeve. Be sure to gently pull the fabric as you sew so the knit can stretch properly.
Step Six: Turn the dress right side out and enjoy!
Melanie looks adorable in her semi-DIY “Avengers” dress (and whenever I yell “Hulk… SMASH.”, she laughs and points to her tummy). This project was so easy that I'm planning on making LOTS more of these.
Does your little girl love superheroes, too?
