One of my biggest concerns when I first got pregnant with Melanie was how our pets (then a dog and a cat) would react to the newest member of our family. Are you feeling concerned about introducing your baby to your furbabies? Then check out these 5 ways to prepare your pet for a new baby (featuring Zylkene) and breathe a little easier!
5 Ways to Prepare Your Pet for a New Baby:
Create a Safe Space: Adding a new person to your household will be overwhelming for everyone so help your pet with that transition by making up a little spot just for them to retreat to. Arrange a bed with blankets, toys, even some of your old clothes that smell like you. Keep this area sacred to the pet – do not allow anyone to disrupt that spot unless absolutely necessary. This allows your pet to have a place to retreat to and a little calm oasis in the post-baby whirlwind.
Play Pretend: Keep a small doll around and pretend that it is a baby when your pet is around. I did this with our cat, Caira, to get her used to having a baby in the bed with me while I nursed and in my arms or lap all the time. She needed to understand that she would have to share those spots once the baby was born. I know, it feels silly to schlep around a baby doll but it really does work and helps your pet feel comfortable sharing you.
Seek Ways to Sooth Them: No matter what you do, your pet will still struggle with the new family and home atmosphere so try incorporating an all-natural calming supplement like Zylkene into your pet’s diet. Thanks to a a unique, milk-derived ingredient in the supplement that promotes calmness and can help your pet cope with this new lifestyle change without the side effect of drowsiness. Helping your pet adjust to changes in your home before your baby arrives can make the transition smoother, leaving more time for family bonding when the baby comes home.
Smells are Important: Animals use scent to familiarize themselves with other animals and humans. Because of this, be sure to ask a family member or friend to take one of the garments or blankets that your baby has worn home to your pet. Let them sniff it and get used to the new smell before you arrive home with the baby.
Help Avoid Jealousy: Pets do feel jealous of new people and will probably be envious of the new baby. Help them feel better about this transition by giving them your attention as soon as you get home from the hospital. Also, make a habit of asking anyone visiting your home after the baby is born to stop and say “hello” to your pet and give them lots of love. This will help your pet understand that they are still important and loved and make them regard the baby as something positive instead of a competitor.

These are some really great tips! We don’t have kids of our own, but I was definitely a little weary introducing our energetic pup to some of the newest members of our family. Luckily, he ADORES children! It’s nice to know that Zylkene can help!
