Super late but what the hell! I've been so excited about Melanie's second ever Halloween costume since she was a baby because it was originally mine (you can see her first Halloween costume here)! When I moved out a million years ago, my mom gave me a small box of outfits and toys that she had saved from my childhood. One of them was the Halloween costume that I wore right before I turned two. I was a bunny and I have always vividly recalled the photos from that day.
In Alaska, Halloween is generally below zero and snowy so everyone's costumes are always designed around winter coats and boots. My costume consisted of a really cute pink wooly peacoat with a yarn bunny tail pinned on and a super cute little bunny hat thing that my mom designed and sewed. I love it completely.
To update the costume for our warmer Texas weather, I decided to swap out the coat for a white onesie and tights. I bought some pink felt and cut out a large oval which I sewed on to the onesie. Then I stitched short lengths of pink ribbon on to the sides. The pink ribbons were for a little something extra – a fluffy pink tulle tutu. Melanie loves her some tutus so when I found one in the Target dollar bin, it was happening. We bought a bit more pink tulle and I just removed the waistband and reattached it with the new tulle folded over the old. Then, I “folded” the tutu in half and tied the pink ribbons through the waistband to make a giant poof on her bottom. I repinned the yarn tail on to the top of the tutu. Paired with the original bunny hat and some pink sparkly shoes – this costume was WONDERFUL.
What did your little one dress up as for Halloween?
