Whatever your reasons behind thinking about having your wedding outside, there are all kinds of amazing ideas out there to help make your ceremony a successful one. Here are just a few of the most interesting ones to keep in mind.

Sometimes, the love you share with another person just can’t be contained within four walls. Or you’ve had an image in your head of tying the knot under fluffy white clouds since you were young. Or maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks on the venue by keeping the ceremony at home.

Embrace the weather. Some couples decide to rent a large tent in case the weather turns bad on their big day, but this defeats the purpose of having a wedding outdoors. Instead, splurge for some nice umbrellas that can pull double duty – they’ll keep your guests dry if there’s rain and cool if the sun is beating down.

Find your focal point. Outdoor venues don’t always have clear focal points like ones that are held indoors. Look for something natural that will draw your guests’ eyes first, such as trees that can serve as an archway. If you can’t find anything already present, there are plenty of ways to easily pull attention.

Ditch chairs – have nature pull up a seat. Instead of renting uncomfortable folding chairs, think outside the box and use things like bales of hay or fallen logs as benches.

Get floral. If you’re going to have your wedding ceremony outside, celebrate the beauty of nature by highlighting or including floral arrangements wherever you can. Public gardens and nurseries can make amazing outdoor wedding venues, but even if you’re saying your vows in your backyard, flowers can really set the mood.

Keep the lighting natural. Those interested in an evening wedding should think about ways to create natural light unless they’re okay with having a bunch of cables snaking everywhere. Paper lanterns can help to keep the natural feel while serving as a nice, soft bit of décor, but another interesting option is to use solar lights in jars for some attractive makeshift lamps.

Let the shoes match the surface. Weddings on grass tend to make high heels difficult, so either find something solid for your bridesmaids to stand on or let them know its okay to wear flats. Those putting together beach weddings may want to provide flip flops for their guests – or a place to stow away shoes and go barefoot on the sand.

Don’t forget the citronella. Unless you’re having your outdoor ceremony in the middle of winter, bugs are going to try to crash it and make things uncomfortable for you and your guests. While there’s no way to completely get rid of insects, you may want to bring an exterminator in to spray a few days before, as well as lighting the area with citronella candles and offering individual cans of bug spray to guests.
